課程概述

一、課程簡介:
The focus of this class is the study of biological, chemical, physical, and geological structure and function of coastal systems; a worldwide survey with emphasis on important coastal habitats and processes

I. Introduction. Definition of coastal and shelf regions.

II. Review of Ocean Dynamic:
Geostrophy,
Ekman transports,
Sverdrup balance.

III Circulation:
Measuring currents: Acoustic Doppler Current Profiler (ADCP), current meters, drogues, high frequency radar.
Forcing of circulation: winds, tides, inertial motion.
Ekman layer dynamics for shallow seas with stratification.
Sea level set-up and buoyancy-driven flows.

IV. Upwelling dynamics.
Wind-driven upwelling
Dynamic uplift and tidal pumping
Zonation of upwelling processes

V. Waves
Wave classification, dispersion, wind waves.
Long waves: tsunamis, seiches, internal waves.
Coastal trapped waves and other oscillations.
Tides: Tidal mixing, Tidal or shelf-sea fronts.

VI. Chemical Properties and Water Quality
Chemical properties, nutrients, inorganic and organic constituents.
Ambient concentrations of measurable variables.

VII. Ecosystems
Microbiological organisms
Phytoplanktons
Benthic community

課程目標
 A coastal area is a region between continental shelf break to the land shore. More than half the human population lives within 100 km of coast. Freshwater from river and surface runoffs, also the land derived materials such as nutrients and trace elements have great influence on the coastal seas. About 70% of global fish resources spend part of their life cycle in this area, which accounts for 90% of total marine biomass. Chemical reactions occurred rapidly between substances from the land and from the ocean. As of physics, a coastal sea acts as a boundary layer and kinetic energy is actively exchanged. Because the physical, chemical and biological processes relate to the material transport in the sea, it can be said the coastal oceanography is a genuinely interdisciplinary study. This course clarifies the quantitative material transport processes in the shelf and coastal ocean
